FAQ

Q: How many lessons will I need?
A:  This depends on your ability and previous knowledge but for beginners, usually 30+ hours recommended. This is dependent on the descretion of the instructor.

Q: Will I get assistance with the theory test?
A: Yes. We build theory tuition into each lesson, as well as providing essential materials such as DVD-cd rom for hazard perception test.

Q:  When should I book my test?
A: You need to have passed your theory test BEFORE you can book your practical test. There can often be a waiting time of 8-9 weeks when booking a practical test. We will tell you when to book your test.

Q: How does the test work?
A: After an eyesight check, you are tested on knowledge of the car (show me tell me) and then around 40 minutes driving to include 1 reversing manoeuvre and sometimes an emergency stop. This is followed by 10 minutes of independent driving ether following a simple map or following road signs for directions. You must not exceed 15 minor faults (e.g. not checking blind spot, incorrect gears) but 1 serious or dangerous fault (e.g. an action which might have caused an accident) is enough to fail.

Q: Do I need to practice between lessons?
A: Practice without qualified supervision is often counterproductive. Faults go uncorrected and become habits. However parental supervision is useful after 20 to 25 hours of driving experience. Advice will be available for the parents.

Q: Do I need a licence before starting lessons?
A: Yes. You must produce a valid current UK Provisional (or Full) License before instruction can commence, and you need to be over 17 years of age.

Q: How can I save on my car insurance?
A: If you take pass plus there is usually 30% off your insurance premium, offered by most insurance companies.

Q: What is pass plus?
A: Pass plus is recommended by the DSA after passing your practical test. It is a good idea to further develop your skills for night driving, motorway driving, bad weather driving, country road driving and inner city driving. These lessons will take one hour tuition per subject totaling six hours tuition altogether.

Q: What should I wear or bring to lessons?
A: Comfortable clothing, flat (preferably thin soled) shoes, glasses if needed for other than reading.

Q: Do i need to pay extra for taking a practical test?
A: There is no extra charge when taking your practical test with PDSM.
